Alumni networks versus community
What's the difference?
Dear Friends,
Recently, I facilitated a networking workshop for students at Trinity College Dublin. This was an opportunity to delve into the Next Generation Networking practice. Most importantly networking as a lifelong investment. At the core of networking is networks (obvious!) and communities.
Like many of you, I tend to use these terms interchangeably. However, they ARE distinct!
What's the difference?
I always return back to Kathy Edersheim's article here that offers this clarity.
As she states:
"Networks are expansive and open without having a concept of membership, little expectation of mutually supportive interaction beyond the first or second connection. Networks establish loose or weak bonds between people."
(and we are all aware of the power of weak ties in providing us with incredible career and life opportunities!)
Kathy also offers insights on a community:
"a community is a mutually supportive, self-perpetuating group with purpose and structure. If you are looking for belongingness and close bonds, you want to find a group (or groups) where you have a shared purpose with the other participants and a structure that facilitates connection."
Your challenge this week (everyone!):
Identify a group you are a part of (or wish to be a part of). Is it a network or community? What are you looking for?
For those involved in working with alumni: Are you fostering an alumni network or alumni community? Which makes better sense for your alumni and for your institutional mission?
Yours in alumni connection,
Maria
